Eva Rothschild creates sculptures and two-dimensional objects whose aesthetics oscillate between minimalist austerity and votive offerings. The artist experiments with materials she gathers, ranging from glass beads to leather, wood, steel and aluminum, elaborating an increasingly varied sculptural vocabulary. Her work draws upon references to art of the 1960s and 1970s, with a particular relationship to Minimalism.

Eva Rothschild’s hybrid visual language offers a broad range of potential interpretations. The meaning in her work is activated by the dynamic relationship between the object and the searching eye of the viewer.

For her new project at the gallery, the artist creates a modular sculpture in aluminum, titled Middle Temple. The sculpture is designed as two sets of screens, that mimic the shape of an open laptop, one of the most ubiquitous of contemporary objects. Placed in the center of the courtyard, the screens interrupt each other’s presence forming an open but complex internal space. The central section of each screen is crossed with a generic geometric form, whose internal faces are painted in three recurring colors that confuse the eye as it travels around and through the structure.

Eva Rothschild approaches and challenges the idea of the object, and the projections placed upon it that come from our experience and relationship with the object itself. Middle Temple, with its inner spaces, creates a new environment that coexists with the outdoor space of the gallery.

The artist is interested in how objects are fetishized and loaded with significance and potency that exceed their material reality. She states: “I’m interested in the ways of looking that go with concepts of faith and in how things are invested with a power above and beyond their materiality, the transference of spirituality onto objects”.

L’ibrido linguaggio di Eva Rothschild offre differenti possibili interpretazioni: nelle sue opere il significato è attivato dalla relazione dinamica tra l’oggetto e l’occhio di chi osserva.

Per il suo nuovo progetto in galleria, Eva Rothschild crea una struttura modulare in alluminio, intitolata Middle Temple. La scultura è concepita come due coppie di schermi, che mimano la forma di un computer portatile aperto, uno degli oggetti contemporanei più diffusi. Posizionati al centro del cortile, gli schermi interrompono uno la presenza dell’altro, creando uno spazio interno aperto ma complesso. La sezione centrale di ogni schermo è attraversata da generiche forme geometriche, i cui lati interni sono dipinti in tre colori ricorrenti nel lavoro dell’artista, che confondono l’occhio nell’atto di esplorare la struttura.

Eva Rothschild affronta e mette in discussione l’idea di oggetto, le proiezioni ad esso associato provenienti dalla nostra esperienza e la nostra relazione con l’oggetto stesso. Middle Temple, con i suoi spazi interiori, crea un nuovo ambiente che convive con lo spazio esterno della galleria, includendolo.

L’artista è interessata a come gli oggetti sono feticizzati e caricati di significato e forza, eccedendo la loro realtà materiale. Eva Rothschild afferma: “Sono interessata alle modalità di osservazione associate al concetto di fede, e a come gli oggetti sono investiti di un potere superiore che va oltre la loro materialità e che trasferisce la spiritualità sull’oggetto”.
