anthea hamilton: cauliflower sundial

In Summer 2025, the Aspen Art Museum will present a new outdoor sculpture by artist Anthea Hamilton (b. 1978, London), commissioned specially for the Hecht Commons. Building on some of Hamilton’s most iconic projects, such as her 2018 immersive architectural performance The Squash in Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries and her Giant Pumpkins series (2022) in collaboration with LOEWE, the newly commissioned work takes the form of a larger-than-life cauliflower sculpture. The artist’s humorous approach infuses a sense of theatricality into this mundane, perishable object, whose formal and textural qualities may recall a human brain, and indirectly cultural consumption. Long fascinated by pop aesthetics, Hamilton skillfully brings different styles, influences and visual registers to cohabit and contaminate one another in her works.
