The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) presents S U M M E R X X, the debut of a new installation by Los Angeles-based artist Pae White. Continuing White’s interest in text-based work and super-graphic interventions, she lifted the phrase “HASTA LA MUERTE” from the graffiti near her studio in East L.A. for her FWM project. The action of suturing and pulling this ephemeral text in the space serves to dimensionalize the recent passing of an art mentor.

Pae White has described her art-making in this way:

“My practice has focused on an exploration of the neglected, the forgotten, the spaces between things, even the things between things. I am equally drawn to the temporary, the fleeting, to the ephemera of everyday life. My work has attempted to subvert the viewer’s expected relationship to an everyday object, nudging them off balance, encouraging a deeper look.”

White created the installation titled S U M M E R X X during her FWM residency primarily using a simple material: a standard, red, craft store yarn. This project continued White’s interest in text-based work and super-graphic interventions; at FWM, the phrase along the museum wall, “HASTA LA MUERTE,” translates to “until death.” White saw this phrase graffitied near her East Los Angeles studio. During the installation, the yarn was woven from wall to wall and across the form of each letter. This act of suturing and pulling to create this ephemeral text in the space served as a way for White to dimensionalize the recent passing of an art mentor.
