In June, the Folkwang Museum invites artists to create new works in the large exhibition hall. Works that break out of the picture frame, change the perspective of the exhibition space and address the spatial existence of painting.
Only what is not is possible, from a song by the band ‘Einstürzende Neubauten’ from 1996, shows works that are characterized by openness and reflection. Painting can be experienced as space or as an object in space. At the same time, their relation to reality is ambiguous. The 1990s were formative for the contemporary generation of artists, who are now between thirty and forty. Invited are Franz Ackermann and Johannes Wohnseifer, two artists who have influenced painting since that time. For the Museum Folkwang, Niele Toroni will realize a new, situational work as a prelude to the exhibition. With the reduction to a brush print, Niele Toroni carried out a radical breakout of the boundaries of the panel painting in the 1960s.
Painted, layered images are interwoven with text fragments and objects in Johannes Wohnseifer’s room arrangements. Franz Ackermann developed room-encompassing wall paintings from photographs and drawings that he made while traveling and walking through the city. Wolfgang Flad’s works oscillate between the image carrier and the object – and can also be used by the visitor at some point. Cornelia Baltes uses humor to expand the canvas image by intervening in the context of the exhibition. Nicolas Party overshadows the rules of the white museum space with a minimalist structure that covers the walls like wallpaper.
