biography
Elene Chantladze was born in Supsa, Georgia, in 1946. She lives and works in Tskaltubo, Georgia.
Elene Chantladze has spent a lifetime telling stories, keeping diaries, imagining theatrical plays, composing poems, and painting. Her art is ultimately a reflection of her existence, the dreamy atmosphere and fable-like scenarios are characterized by a powerful, relatable language. Chantladze’s work is not formally defined by her approach to the medium, but depicted through a naive poetic surrealism, an invitation to rediscover the world through the eyes of an outsider, far from the influence of major cities and art centers.
Elene Chantladze has been the subject of solo exhibitions at kaufmann repetto, Milan; kaufmann repetto, new york; anton kern, new york; Kunsthalle Zurich; Gallery Nectar, Tbilisi; LC Queisser, Tbilisi; Modern Art, London; and Fierman Gallery, New York. With artist Ser Serpas, she had an exhibition at Conceptual Fine Arts, Milan, and has been included the group exhibitions girls, girls, girls, curated by Simone Rocha at Lismore Castle Arts in Lismore, Ireland, and more recently with Rooms Studio at MHKA in Antwerp, Belgium. The publication A Gift to Irma with essays by Ser Serpas and Miciah Hussey is forthcoming. in 2024 she was included in the 15th Baltic Triennial in Vilnius.
