This new creation – which will premiere at DE SINGEL – is anthea hamilton’s most ambitious exploration of her sculptural and installation practice. As always, the British artist uses various systems, codes and media that are outside the tradition of the visual arts. With her characteristic dedication, Hamilton transforms all elements of the space – stage, audience, scenography, light, sound and time – into sculptural material that is at the service of the performer.
Anthea Hamilton works on the cutting edge between installation, sculpture, film and performance. In her practice, she dives into the meandering history of visual and cultural production, and uses her eye as a both subjective and productive lens through which she can see and re-arrange the world. Her works present an alternative and fragmented reality in which gender roles, sexuality, domestic life and different cultural traditions are no longer entrenched clichés, but become fluid notions. In 2016, Hamilton was shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize for visual artists. Her work is exhibited worldwide.
