100 years of surrealism

In 2024 it will have been 100 years since artist and writer André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto (1924): the starting point of the art movement that we call surrealism. Surrealism is best known for its dream images of merging or contradictory objects. With this, the artists want to show their subconscious. This often concerns the body or sexual desires.

A new perspective

In Forbidden Territories you will experience a new perspective on 100 years of surrealist art. You will discover how surrealist artists use the landscape as a comparison or means to respond to social developments, such as political unrest, gender identity and expression, and the relationship between humans and nature.

You will not only look at well-known names from the first half of the 20th century. There is also a lot of attention paid to contemporary artists and artists who have fallen outside the canon, such as female artists and artists from outside Europe. With names such as Marion Adnams, Jean Arp, María Berrío, Leonora Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun, Max Ernst, Lee Miller, Wael Shawky, Gurminder Sikand and Mary Wykeham.

This new perspective on surrealism will make you look at the landscape and the world around you in a new or different way.
