The Kunsthalle Lingen opens the 2013 exhibition program with a solo presentation by the internationally known artist Thea Djordjadze, whose work has been known to a wide audience at the latest since her participation in dOCUMENTA (13). She was born in Tbilisi in 1971 and completed her studies at the Art Academy in Tbilisi as well as at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, where she was a master student of the internationally known artist Rosemarie Trockel. Today Thea Djordjadze lives in Berlin.
Her exhibition in the Kunsthalle Lingen is being created in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Malmö and the Museum of Modern Art Luxembourg and is the only stop in Germany on a longer exhibition tour with works by the artist.
Thea Djordjadze mainly makes objects for which she often uses ephemeral and fragile materials such as plaster of paris, ceramics, silicone, sponges, cardboard, textiles and soap. The shelves, railings, walls, and boxes that support or surround the objects are simple but delicate architectural structures made of wood and metal. Their appearance is in stark contrast to the organic shapes and “unfinished” surfaces of the objects leaning against the walls, lying on shelves or hanging from railings. Often they arise in direct confrontation with the given architectural conditions of the places for which they are created.
