kaufmann repetto is pleased to announce Oxymoron Grey, Thea Djordjadze’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, which will present a site-specific installation.

Thea Djordjadze’s sculptures often appear as unfinished, yet unequivocally suggestive compositions that punctuate and transform the space they inhabit. She unites sculpture with painterly and performative gestures to create a totalizing experience of installation and space – an enigmatic scenario in which sculpture becomes the prosthesis for an imagined, interior world.

Using materials usually kept on the inside of sculpture – wire, plaster, foam – Djordjadze creates delicate and elegant objects that seem to retrace the narrative of their creation. Like artifacts or souvenirs, her objects are laced with an entirely subjective aura, a mood, an atmosphere. Hand prints, smeared paint, a mass of mould clay poised casually on an orientalist rug: in Djordjadze’s work, one always has a sense of the artist’s intimate and immediate presence. Here, form and material are treated as one and the same and that which appears static or inert, slowly becomes organic and animated.

For Djordjadze, an exhibition begins with unfinished works, materials that are worked, reworked and positioned. Originally trained as a painter, for the artist space is modeled like a picture plane, where depth and dimension can be built up or broken down. Created in-situ, the exhibited works are the inhabitants of theatre stage, in a process of making that is constantly re-eloborated. Djordjadze speaks an ambivalent language, at once material, at once pure sensation, a paradox on which rests, Oxymoron Grey.

Thea Djordjadze (born 1971, Tbilisi, Georgia) studied under Rosemarie Trockel at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and currently lives and works in Berlin. Her recent exhibitions include the Georgian Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Malmö Konsthall, Kunstverein Lingen Kunsthalle, Kunstverein Nurnberg, Kunsthalle Basel, and The Common Guild, Glasgow, and a major solo installation at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, Germany. Selected group exhibitions include the 2003 Venice Biennale, 2008 Lyon Biennale, and the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art in 2008, as well as exhibitions at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Hayward Gallery, London; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Sculpture Centre, New York; and ACCA, Melbourne.

Le sculture di Thea Djordjadze appaiono spesso non finite e, allo steso tempo, si presentano come suggestive composizioni tese a enfatizzare la trasformazione dello spazio che abitano. Forma e materiali si integrano, e ciò che appare statico o inerte diventa, a uno sguardo attento, dinamico e animato.

Per Thea Djordjadze una mostra inizia con frammenti di lavori non finiti, materiali manipolati, rielaborati e infine posizionati. Grazie anche alla sua formazione pittorica, per l’artista lo spazio è modellato come un dipinto su tela, in cui profondità e dimensioni possono essere enfatizzate o anullate. Create in-situ, le opere sono protagoniste di uno spettacolo inscenato attraverso un processo di elaborazione in costante divenire. Thea Djordjadze parla un linguaggio ambivalente, a tratti materico, a tratti puramente sensibile, le sua opere vivono all’interno di un paradosso: Oxymoron Grey.

Thea Djordjadze (1971, Tbilisi, Georgia) ha studiato pittura alla Kunstakademie Düsseldorf con Rosemarie Trockel, attualmente vive e lavora a Berlino.
